Engaging citizens in government policy and decision making.
Overview
The rise and proliferation of information technology has provided an opportunity for governments to engage their citizens in a more direct manner. Online policy consultation is one way in which this technology is being used.
To assist agencies in engaging citizens, we have produced Better Practice Checklist 12 - Online Policy Consultation.
Examples of Better Practice in Policy Consultation
Australian Government
- The Department of Defence undertook a consultation process to determine what Australians think must be done to ensure that we continue to have military forces that are effective and efficient.
- AGIMO's Currently Consulting on ....... seeks public comment on a range of issues during the policy development process.
- Area Consultative Committees from DOTARS provides information on the consultative processes around rural and metropolitan stakeholders.
- Regional Business Development Analysis Consultation provides information such as a questions paper and details on the consultation and submissions received.
State, Territory and Local governments
- Western Australia's Citizenscape assists people who want to participate in political processes and outlines a range of ways in which both citizens and decision-makers can benefit from broader participation in decision making. Includes a consultation catalogue listing government consultations that have taken or are taking place in Western Australia.
- E-Petitions is a trial of e-petitioning by the Queensland Parliament, with support from the Queensland Government.
- Your City Your Say is a Brisbane City Council website that provides a forum where citizens can discuss issues that impact Brisbane.
- Get Involved is a Queensland Government site that provides a means for citizens to comment on key issues and provides a central online location for information on topics the Government is currently considering.

- Consulting Canadians pilot website.
