More closely engaging citizens in democratic government
Overview
The proliferation of information technology has provided an opportunity for governments to engage their citizens in a more direct manner.
Engagement with the public occurs continually. The public interacts every day with the government on a range of issues for a range of reasons.
The OECD released a policy brief in March 2003 on Engaging Citizens Online which suggests principles for better engagement online.
To assist agencies AGIMO released Principles for ICT-enabled Citizen Engagement in 2007.
Examples of Better Practice
- 'Your Voice in Europe' is the European Commission's 'single access point' to a wide variety of consultations, discussions and other tools which enable you to play an active role in the European policy-making process.
- The Hansard Society's E-Democracy programme seeks to develop innovative ways of using new interactive technologies to reconnect Parliament with citizens and encourage participation in the democratic process.
- Bowling Together - Online citizen engagement in policy deliberation links to an electronic copy of Stephen Coleman's and John Goetze's well-regarded book.
