Ensuring that the Privacy Commission's guidelines are met

Overview

It is the responsibility of Australian Government departments and agencies to ensure that their websites comply with the Privacy Act 1988. If personal information may be transmitted, published, solicited and collected via the internet agencies need to consider the relevant privacy implications.

The public needs to trust that their privacy will be protected before they make significant use of the Internet for services. It is therefore best practice for websites to include a prominent Privacy Statement or Policy which states what information is collected about individuals when they visit the website, how it will be used and whether it will be disclosed.

The Australian Privacy Commissioner has published guidelines to assist agencies to adopt best privacy practice and ensure their websites comply with the Privacy Act. The current guidelines cover openness, collection of personal information, security of personal information, and publishing personal information.
