Information Management Strategy Committee
Providing shared leadership on multi-agency and whole-of-government ICT governance and investment
Overview
The Information Management Strategy Committee (IMSC) was established as a result of a recommendation outlined in the 'Australian Government Use of Information and Communications Technology: A New Governance and Investment Framework' report. This report was released as a Management Advisory Committee (MAC) report on 15 October 2002.
The report outlined a framework to:
- Facilitate a 'big picture' approach to ICT issues, although agencies will continue to be responsible for their own ICT arrangements.
- Promote closer collaboration between agencies in the next phase of ICT implementation, which will involve delivery of more integrated and interactive information and services online and require greater investment.
- Encourage a cooperative approach to decisions on standards, investment, security, privacy, shared infrastructure and reuse of intellectual property, and ensure that these reflect the impact and benefits across government, rather than on individual agencies alone.
The IMSC, with the support of its Chief Information Officer (CIO) Committee, oversaw these initiatives.
The IMSC comprised of members at Secretary or CEO level and was chaired by Dr Ian Watt, the Secretary of the then Department of Finance and Deregulation. The membership was drawn from agencies that have key central roles or major responsibility for delivering services online. The following agencies were represented on the IMSC:
- The Secretary of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
- The Secretary of Defence
- The Secretary of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts
- The Secretary of Health and Ageing
- The Secretary of Department of Human Services
- The Chief Executive Officer of Australian Customs Service
- The Secretary of Industry, Tourism and Resources
- The Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department
- The Commissioner of the Australian Taxation Office
- The Australian Statistician of the Australian Bureau of Statistics
- The Chief Executive Officer of Centrelink
- The Australian Government Chief Information Officer of the Australian Government Information Management Office, Department of Finance and Deregulation
The IMSC was replaced by the Secretaries' Committee on ICT (SCICT) in June 2006.
